Jute is one of the oldest flooring materials in India — and one of the few that still makes sense today. At Pequra, every handmade jute carpet in this collection is woven by hand from natural jute fibre, at our Noida facility backed by Shree Sai International's 40 years of rug manufacturing.

Whether you need a jute carpet for your living room, dining area, or a flat-weave jute rug for a bedroom, this collection covers the full range — from plain weaves and kilims to geometric hand-braided designs. Natural jute flooring that suits Indian conditions.

What Makes Natural Jute Different

Jute is a plant fibre — it grows in 3 to 4 months, needs no pesticides at scale, and is fully biodegradable at end of life. A natural jute carpet has none of the off-gassing or chemical smell you get with synthetic flooring. What you do get is a breathable, lightweight surface that stays cool underfoot in Indian summers. Jute is also significantly lighter than wool — easier to move, roll, and store.

Jute fibres have a natural texture that holds its character over years of use. Unlike synthetic pile, it doesn't generate static. And because jute is grown primarily in West Bengal and Bangladesh, these carpets are genuinely local in origin — one of the few home products that still is.
For a comparison of natural fibre options, see our rug size guide

Jute Carpet Weaving Techniques

  • Handwoven Flatweave — Warp and weft jute threads are interlaced on a loom to produce a flat, reversible surface with no pile. These are our most versatile designs — they sit flat, clean easily, and work in any room where a low-profile rug makes sense.
  • Kilim — A flatweave technique where coloured jute threads are woven in geometric patterns. The design is built into the weave itself, not printed or tufted on top. Several products in this collection are kilim-woven — look for bold geometric patterns in beige, brown, and black.
  • Hand-Braided — Jute strands are braided into thick ropes and then coiled and stitched into a rug. The result is a denser, more textured surface with visible construction — heavier underfoot than a flatweave.
  • Herringbone — A specific interlacing pattern that creates a V-shaped zigzag across the surface. Herringbone jute rugs have a more structured look and work well in hallways and dining rooms.

100% Jute vs Jute-Wool and Jute-Cotton Blends

This collection includes both 100% jute carpets and jute blends. A jute-wool blend (typically 90% jute, 10% wool) adds slight softness and a small amount of insulation to the jute base — useful if you want the natural look of jute but prefer a marginally softer surface underfoot.

A jute-cotton blend gives a lighter, more flexible rug that is slightly easier to clean than pure jute. If you are looking for something softer and more pile-driven, our handmade wool carpet collection is a better starting point.

Which Room Works Best for a Jute Carpet

  • Living Room — A flatweave or kilim jute carpet for the living room holds up to daily foot traffic without showing wear the way pile rugs do. Neutral jute tones — beige, brown, cream — work with most furniture. For larger spaces, 6x9 ft or 8x10 ft anchors the room well. Our guide on choosing the best rug for your living room covers sizing and placement in detail.
  • Dining Room — Jute is one of the better choices under a dining table — its flat surface does not catch chair legs the way pile rugs do, and food spills can be spot-cleaned quickly. A 6x9 ft fits most 6-seater dining setups.
  • Bedroom — A jute carpet for the bedroom works best in dry conditions. A plain weave or herringbone design in a neutral tone keeps the room calm. See our guide on the best rugs for bedroom comfort for more.

Jute Carpet Sizes and Price Guide

Jute carpet prices in India vary by weave type and size. Smaller plain-weave jute rugs start at approximately ₹4,099. Larger sizes, kilim patterns, and jute-wool blends are priced higher.

Caring for Your Jute Carpet

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only head — no beater bar. For spot cleaning, blot spills immediately with a dry cloth, then a slightly damp cloth if needed. Avoid soaking: jute absorbs moisture and takes time to dry, and repeated wetting causes fibres to stiffen or develop mildew in humid conditions.

New jute carpets have a natural earthy smell that fades within a few weeks. Airing the rug in a well-ventilated space speeds this up. It is not a product defect. For periodic deep cleaning: Pequra's professional rug washing service  | For repairs: our rug repair service

Jute Carpets Made at the Source

Pequra is part of Shree Sai International, a manufacturer that has been making handmade rugs since 1984. Jute carpet production has been central to our work from the beginning — it is not a category we entered recently to follow a trend. The artisans who weave these pieces have spent years working with jute, and that shows in how the fibres are handled and finished.

Every purchase is backed by a Pequra product warranty. Custom sizes available on request. Pan-India delivery.

FAQs

Q: What is a jute carpet?

A jute carpet is a floor covering woven from natural jute fibre — a plant-based material grown mainly in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Jute carpets are flatweave byconstruction, meaning they have no pile, and are valued for their natural texture, breathability, and biodegradable composition.

Q: Are jute carpets good for Indian homes?

Yes, in most of India. Jute performs well in dry conditions and handles warm, moderate climates easily. The caveat is humidity — in coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, or Kochi, or in rooms with consistent moisture exposure, jute can absorb water, stiffen, or develop mildew over time. For high-humidity spaces, wool or cotton is a more durable choice.

Q: Do jute carpets smell?

New jute carpets have a natural earthy or grassy smell when first unpacked. This comes from the jute fibre itself and fades within 2 to 4 weeks of normal use. Airing the rug in a ventilated space speeds up the process. It is not a defect.

Q: How do I clean a jute carpet at home?

Vacuum weekly with a suction-only head. For spot spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth — do not rub. If moisture is needed, use a barely damp cloth and let the rug dry completely before placing it back. Avoid soaking or steam cleaning, as jute absorbs water and takes long to dry.

Q: Are jute carpets durable?

Yes, in the right conditions. A well-made handwoven jute carpet in a dry interior space holds up for 5 to 10 years with basic care. The flatweave construction means there is no pile to wear down. It does soften with use, which most people find adds to its character.

Q: Jute carpet vs cotton carpet — which is better?

Jute has more natural texture and a stronger earthy look; cotton is softer underfoot and handles washing better. Jute is the better choice for a living room or dining area. Cotton is better for spaces where the rug will be cleaned frequently or where softness matters more.

Q: Are jute carpets good for bedrooms?

A jute carpet for the bedroom works well in dry conditions. Flatweave and herringbone designs in neutral tones suit most bedroom setups. Avoid placing jute in attached bathroom zones or any area with regular moisture exposure.

Q: What is the price of a jute carpet in India?

At Pequra, jute carpets start at approximately ₹4,099 for a 4x6 ft plain-weave design. Kilim patterns, larger sizes, and jute-wool blends are priced higher. Custom sizes are available at prices based on dimensions and weave type.

Q: Are jute carpets suitable for outdoor use?

No. Jute is a natural fibre that absorbs moisture — exposure to rain, direct sun, or outdoor humidity will cause the fibres to degrade, stiffen, and eventually rot. All jute carpets in this collection are designed for indoor use only.

Q: Can I get a jute carpet in a custom size?

Yes. Pequra's custom rug service can make jute carpets in any dimension. You can also customise the weave design and colour. Custom orders typically take 4 to 6 weeks depending on size and design complexity.
